Keep Your Car in Good Shape

The first step to ensure your safety in wet weather should take the form of preventative maintenance. Schedule periodic inspections and fix any defects in your car's safety features as needed. Uneven tire tread, weak brakes, or malfunctioning windshield wipers make wet-weather driving needlessly risky.

You can calculate the distance between vehicles simply by watching the vehicle in front of you pass a particular object and then counting the seconds before you pass that object yourself. At the same time, try to avoid getting trapped within a tight cluster of surrounding vehicles in adjacent lanes.

React to Skids the Right Way

A layer of water on the road can reduce tire traction to the point that tires essentially drift along the surface of the water, a problem known as hydroplaning. When you hydroplane, your car can easily go into an uncontrolled skid and potentially lead to a collision.

How you should react to a skid partly depends on what kind of braking system your vehicle has. If you drive an old car with rear-wheel drive, you may have traditional power brakes. If you go into a skid, turn into the skid until you regain control, and then turn out of the skid to correct your orientation.

Most cars on the road today come equipped with anti-lock brakes. In an anti-lock brake system (ABS), sensors that detect a potential skid or wheel lockup reduce hydraulic pressure to the wheel or wheels in danger of skidding or locking up. This system requires a different strategy to react to a skid once it occurs.

If your ABS cannot prevent you from entering a skid, don't slam on the brakes or try to drive into the skid. Instead, take your foot off of the accelerator, keep a firm grip on the wheel, and direct your gaze toward where you want the car to go. You will then naturally steer the car in a way that corrects for the skid.

Plan for a Distraction-Free Drive

When you read or send a text message, the action may seem almost instantaneous, but don't let that fool you. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that the average text occupies smartphone users for five seconds. Most people wouldn't voluntarily keep their eyes shut for five seconds while driving!

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of accidents in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control, distracted driving accounts for over 1,000 accidents and about nine deaths per day.

Whether you're new behind the wheel or have been driving for decades, avoid these common distracting habits to help keep yourself and others safer on the road.

USING A PHONE WITHOUT A HANDS-FREE DEVICE

Most areas now have laws against using a phone without a hands-free device while you're driving, but this remains one of the most prevalent and dangerous distractions. A study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that 660,000 drivers in the U.S. are using a phone or other device at any given moment in the day.

Moreover, this problem is only getting worse as phones become more advanced and able to perform more tasks. In one survey, drivers admitted to using phones for:

Texting
Taking pictures
Browsing social media platforms
Watching videos and/or shows
Video chatting

No longer is talking with your hands on a phone - or even texting - all that drivers are doing. In some cases, there's almost no difference in how people use their phones in the car and elsewhere.

Allowing for legally permitted phone use via a hands-free device or in-car platform, you shouldn't use a phone for any other purpose while you're behind the wheel. Even passively watching something takes your eyes off the road long enough to lead to a potential accident. If something truly important comes up, you can pull over in a safe place and give the matter your attention.

DRINKING AND EATING

Perhaps the only habit more common than using a phone while driving is eating while driving. A separate survey found that 83 percent of people will to drink a beverage and drive, and 70 percent will eat and drive.

Even though most drivers engage in this behavior, drinking and eating while driving is extremely dangerous. The habits increase the likelihood of an accident by 80 percent, and they account for the majority of near-crash incidents.

To be as safe as possible on the road, try not to drink and eat while you're driving. There's certainly no law that requires you to skip the drive-thru for a dine-in meal, but taking a few extra moments to enjoy some food at a table could help prevent a costly collision.

ARGUING CHILDREN IN THE BACK SEAT

For parents or anyone else who drives with children, backseat arguments can be one of the most problematic distractions. Parents often want to address arguments when they arise, but doing so requires diverting some attention away from the road. Additionally, arguments are often impossible to escape because you can't turn children off like you can with a phone.

Whenever a backseat argument arises, train yourself to keep your focus on the road. Whatever the fight is about, it's almost certainly not as important as a truck that veers into your lane or a deer that jumps into the road.

If you do need to intervene, pull over when you can do so safely, and then give the children your full attention.

DAYDREAMING

Although a seemingly benign activity, daydreaming is actually a form of distracted driving. No matter what you're thinking about, daydreaming takes your mind off the task at hand - safely navigating the roadway. DRIVING WITH CHILDREN: SAFETY CONCERNS AND OTHER DRIVING TIPS

Learning to drive is all about learning to adapt and react to your surroundings. Your safety, the safety of your passengers, and the safety of others on the road are your highest priorities. Driving with people in your car, especially children, can make your job as a driver more challenging.

Learn more about your responsibility as a driver when you have children in your car. You should do everything you can to ensure their safety while maintaining your concentration on the road.

Safety Seats

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, all children should use car seats until they exceed the height and weight limits for the seats - usually around age 8. You must adjust the car seat to fit your child and install the seat properly. If you are a new driver, visit your local fire or police station to have car seats installed properly, or contact a local car seat technician.

Unfortunately, many drivers underestimate the importance of using car seats for children. They think that when a child is older, a booster seat or five-point harness is not necessary. However, children should remain in safety seats that allow the seatbelt to go over the strongest part of their body: the hips and chest.

Once your children outgrow their car seats, they should continue to use a belt-positioning booster seat until they are big enough for the seat belt to fit properly.

When a child is too short, the belt can cut into their stomach and the soft tissues of the midriff. In accidents, the forward force of the car can result in the belt causing extensive internal injuries. Without the use of a seatbelt, a child might be ejected from the vehicle.

Also, remember that children should not ride in the front seat at all until they are at least 12 years old.

Loose Objects

Driving with children can mean much more paraphernalia in the car itself. As a rule, try to reduce the number of loose items that are in the car. These become projectiles in motion in a crash. In particular, don't let children store items on the back ledge behind the seat in a car, as these can cause head injuries.

Competing Attention

A big problem for new drivers is distraction, and if you are an adult, your children may be your biggest distraction. The baby might be crying, young children might ask you questions, or you might have two siblings fighting in the back seat.

Train yourself to watch the road first, and don't be tempted to spend more than a second or two checking the rear-view mirror. Children can distract you from the road, and the distraction can be costly.

Before leaving the house, prepare your children from the drive by putting water in the cupholders, snacks where your kids can reach, and toys near the baby. These toys should clip to the seat to prevent them from flying forward in a car accident.

Driver Responsibilities

Finally, recognize your responsibilities as a driver. Children cannot buckle themselves. They cannot share seat belts. It is your job to make sure the straps are tightened on the harness of a car seat. It is also your job to enforce the rules of safety in the car, which might mean pulling over to address issues of a baby who is hungry or a child who won't stop crying.

CHECK OUT THE INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAY SAFETY LISTINGS

Each year, the IIHS releases a list of the safest cars for that model year. For the safest cars, opt for one that's on the "top safety pick" list. However, if these happen to not be suitable for your purposes, any car with a "top safety pick" designation is still a good choice. These ratings are determined by crash safety, restraint and headlight tests.

AVOID VERY SMALL OR LIGHT VEHICLES

In any crash, a very small or light vehicle is at a disadvantage. These vehicles don't offer the same protection to the passengers as a larger, heavier vehicle. Driving school can help you learn to drive or fulfill a legal requirement before you get your license, but there are other reasons you may need to attend a driving school. Whether you are a first-time teenage driver or are attending school later in life, what you put in will significantly affect what you get out of the classes.

First-Time Driver Programs

Teens are often excited to get their first driver's license and get out on the road, but most states have requirements for drivers under 18 years old that require them to attend a driving school. The school must meet specific guidelines and offer a particular amount of educational hours to qualify to fulfill this requirement, so if you are looking for a school to get started with, ask about the program before signing up.

You've heard about people having a designated driver when they go out to enjoy an evening with friends. New drivers, however, might not understand the full value of choosing a person to be the designated driver for the evening.

3 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR TEEN DRIVER SAFE

As a parent, you do everything in your power to keep your kids safe. At times, this can be a daunting task, especially when your kids are old enough to drive without supervision.

It is probably not surprising to you that the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States is being involved in a motor vehicle accident. And when your teen is driving with other people in the vehicle, it doubles their chances of getting into a fatal accident.

What can you do to foster your teen's independence while also keeping them safe when driving?

1. Don't Allow Your Teenager to Text and Drive

At one time, drinking while driving was the leading cause of death for teen drivers. While driving under the influence is still an issue, texting while driving now kills more teen drivers than alcohol does.

Road rage is a scary and all-too-common phenomenon when behind the wheel. Whether you suffer from road rage yourself or end up the victim of an angry driver, road rage puts everybody in the area at risk.
